Frequently Asked Questions

How much do you charge for ear wax removal?

We have a simple and fair pricing structure and we charge £60 on a per appointment basis.  Our prices are kept low so that you don’t have to decide whether you need one or both ears done and we will not charge more for both ears.

How many sessions will I need for full resolution of my ear wax problem?

In the vast majority of cases we are able to achieve full resolution in a single appointment for both ears. If however your wax is compacted and you need a follow-up appointment after using drops, we will charge the discounted rate of £35 for the follow-up appointment.

What is microsuction and why is it the safest ear wax removal method?

Microsuction Ear wax removal has been shown to be one of the safest methods to remove ear wax from your ear. The audiologist treating you looks at your ear using magnification and a powerful light source so that they can see exactly where they are working and how your ear wax needs to be removed safely. A gentle medical suction pump is attached to sterile suction tube and suction is then used to clean the ear without the use of water.

It is safer than traditional methods because of the level of vision and control available with this method. Because water -based methods come with an increased risk of infection and injury, many GP practices have stopped using them altogether and the the NICE guidelines suggest that clinicians stop offering ear syringing as a service altogether.

How long does the process take and is it painful?

Microsucion ear wax removal carried out skilfully should generally not be painful and should be swift. Our audiologists work in NHS audiology departments including specialist paediatric clinics  and are used to working with utmost precision and care.  Sometimes wax may adhere to some hair or skin. If this is the case we may put some sodium bicarbonate drops in your ear during your appointment so that there is no discomfort. We like to allocate an abundance of time to each appointment so that we can achieve a safe and painless resolution in a single appointment.

On occasion if your wax is really hard and your ear is hot, swollen and tender, or if you have an ongoing infection you may experience discomfort when we touch your ear. In such circumstances the key is patience and slow work.

Do you recommend using ear drops before my microsuction ear wax removal appointment?

Many of our clients prefer to use a few days of olive oil drops before their appointment and doing so can indeed help us to remove the wax from your ear swiftly. However, everyone’s wax is of different consistency. If you have had ear wax removal done before and you did not need to use olive oil, chances are you don’t need to use it this time around if your environmental circumstances remain unchanged, such as, if you have not started working in a dusty environment.

That said, prolonged usage of drops can create a very wet sump of wax in your ear which may mean that we have to leave a small amount of waxy residue behind in your ear canal. So in the first instance your best bet is to use oil based drops for two or three days just prior to your appointment, if that is possible.

Never use drops in your ear if you have an infection or a perforation without medical advice.

I am not sure that I have wax in my ear, should I still book?

If your ear feels blocked, and we find that your ears are actually clear of wax, we will use your appointment time to check your middle ear function (tympanometry) and offer advice on how to go about resolving your problem. We may also carry out a full hearing assessment and provide you and your GP with the results included in the normal £60 appointment fee.

If you prefer, call us asking for an ear inspection; we can have a look in your ear. If ear wax removal is recommended you will pay the usual £60 fee and if not you will only have to pay the £20 booking fee for the ear inspection.

How much do you charge for home visits?

We make a limited number of these slots available because we realise how hard it is for some people to access wax removal services. Generally we offer these slots if attending one of our clinics is not an option.  Given the time involved, we have to charge £85 for all home visits even if upon arrival there is no wax requiring removal.
